Our Story

The consulting engineering practice, Van Heerden Calitz & Hayes, was established in Pretoria in 1953 when founder member Willem van Heerden entered the civil and structural engineering field. As the practice expanded he was joined by Gerrit Calitz and George Hayes. The practice quickly gained widening respect and stature. In the mid 1980's came the amalgamation with two more firms, Salmon & Cilliers Inc and Werner WO Kurzke & Partners which added branch offices in Pietersburg, Rustenburg and Mafikeng. In the 1990's the firm was joined by Jamie Paola & Associates. McCartan, Shaw and Robinson, consulting Structural Engineers joined the firm in 2007.

As the firm matured, growing ever more progressive and more dynamic in a fast-changing South Africa, we gave it a newer, simpler name: Civil Concepts.

Strong leadership from the partners is a key feature of the management of the firm, enabling it to undertake a diverse range of projects either regionally or nationally, with major emphasis on personal service by the partners.

At Civil Concepts we have been a long time equal opportunities employer, the firm fully endorsing the pressing need to empower those who were previously disadvantaged.

Civil Concepts represents a substantial resource of qualifications, skills, experience and entrepreneurship.

Their right to a presence in their chosen business sectors has encouraged Civil Concepts to initiate a number of alliances and joint ventures in various civil, structural engineering and related disciplines. These efforts are largely centred on community based development projects and construction.

This firm has also formulated clearly-stated objectives to advance the careers of deserving employees, to continue providing training and mentoring, to accelerate the empowerment of communities and to hasten the delivery of service.

We believe by presenting these opportunities we encourage a well-rounded working environment, enabling ourselves to provide the utmost quality to not only employees but clients alike.
